Kathmandu: The global mountaineering community is mourning the loss of legendary climber Nirmal “Nims Dai” Purja, who died at the age of 43 after an avalanche struck his expedition on Broad Peak in Pakistan’s Karakoram mountain range.

The fatal avalanche struck on July 30, 2026, during an expedition on Broad Peak, the world’s 12th-highest mountain. Search and rescue efforts continued for several days before his expedition company, Elite Exped, officially confirmed his death on August 1, 2026. The avalanche also claimed the lives of several other climbers, making it one of the deadliest incidents of the climbing season.
