Kolkata, India – The SFI’s Jadavpur University (JU) unit on Sunday asserted that nobody can question the students’ love for the country, a day after West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari alleged the presence of “tukde-tukde” gang and the “raising of pro-azaadi slogans” on the campus. In an open letter to the CM, the SFI addressed his remarks about Vande Mataram not being sung, the national flag not being hoisted, and CCTV cameras not being installed. The SFI strongly opposed what it called a “mindset” and provided facts to counter the allegations.
The SFI pointed out that CCTV cameras are indeed installed, and the incidents of August 19 night, when outsiders entered the campus, vandalised it, and set fires, have been captured on them. The student wing of CPI(M) questioned the CM’s claims about anti-national elements, stating that while ideological differences exist between student organisations, love for the country is not one of them. “Nobody can question our love for the country,” it asserted, inviting the CM to the campus for a healthy debate.

The SFI also addressed the alleged desecration of the JU emblem during the August 20 protests, designed by renowned artist Nandalal Bose, calling it a symbol of Indian culture. It urged the CM not to let political differences hurt the cultural creation and to avoid labelling Jadavpur as a “den of terrorists.” The SFI also flagged infrastructure issues, including poor laboratories, libraries, and classrooms, and requested the government’s support for development. It concluded by expressing hope that the CM and ministers would consider these issues with an open mind, noting that if Jadavpur University develops, it would bring glory to the entire state.
