Tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan have escalated sharply after Pakistani forces carried out airstrikes along the border regions, reportedly targeting militant hideouts. However, Afghan authorities have alleged that the strikes hit civilian areas, including homes and religious sites, leading to significant casualties.
According to Afghan officials, the attacks took place in eastern provinces such as Nangarhar and Paktika, where dozens of people, including women and children, were killed or injured. The Afghan Ministry of Defence condemned the strikes as a violation of sovereignty and international law.
Pakistan’s Justification
Pakistan has defended the operation, stating that it was a targeted action against militant groups, particularly the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which Islamabad blames for a recent surge in terror attacks inside the country.
The strikes reportedly targeted multiple camps and hideouts of armed groups operating near the border. Pakistani authorities described the operation as “intelligence-based” and necessary to counter cross-border terrorism.
Civilian Casualties Spark Outrage
Afghanistan, however, has strongly rejected Pakistan’s claims, asserting that the strikes primarily affected civilian infrastructure. Reports indicate that residential homes and even a religious school were hit during the operation, resulting in heavy civilian losses.
Afghan officials have labeled the incident a “criminal act” and warned that such actions could further destabilize the region and worsen humanitarian conditions.
‘Calculated Response’ Warning
In a strong reaction, Afghanistan’s defence ministry has warned that it will deliver a “calculated response at an appropriate time.” This statement signals a potential escalation in already strained relations between the two neighboring countries.
The ministry emphasized that any response would be carefully planned but made it clear that the country would not ignore what it considers repeated violations of its territory.
Background: Growing Border Conflict
The latest incident comes amid a broader pattern of rising violence and mistrust between the two nations. Pakistan has repeatedly accused Afghanistan of allowing militant groups to operate from its soil, while Afghanistan has denied these allegations and criticized Pakistan’s military actions.
Recent months have seen multiple attacks, counter-operations, and cross-border tensions, highlighting the fragile security situation in the region.
Uncertain Path Ahead
With both sides maintaining strong positions, the situation remains volatile. While Pakistan continues its crackdown on militant groups, Afghanistan’s warning of retaliation raises concerns about further escalation.
The international community is closely watching developments, as any prolonged conflict between the two countries could have serious implications for regional stability.
