Renowned Tamil film actress Trisha Krishnan has publicly condemned a controversial comment made by Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagendran, calling it “distasteful and inappropriate” and highlighting how women’s names are improperly injected into political discourse for partisan purposes.

The incident followed Nagendran’s remarks about actor-turned-politician Thalapathy Vijay and his newly formed political outfit, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Instead of focusing on policy or political issues, Nagendran reportedly said that Vijay should “come out of Trisha’s house first” if he wanted to understand political reality — a comment that brought Trisha’s name into the debate despite her having no formal political role.

Trisha’s Response and Stand

In response, Trisha issued a legal statement through her lawyer, asserting that she never expected such comments “from a person holding a high stature in the State’s political space.” She emphasised that she is politically neutral, not affiliated with any political party, and wishes to be defined by her professional work in cinema rather than by personal associations. Her statement, shared on social media, carried the caption: “Disrespect should and always will be called out.”

Trisha’s legal communiqué stressed that personal lives should never be made the subject of public commentary or discourse, and urged public figures to maintain responsibility and evolve the level of political debate rather than resorting to personal innuendos.

Wider Reaction and Apology

The remarks triggered criticism across social media and political circles. Several political leaders and commentators highlighted how such language diverts attention from substantive political debates and can reinforce gender stereotypes. In the wake of the backlash, Nagendran later expressed regret, saying his comment “slipped out by mistake,” although the controversy continued to draw attention to how public figures should frame their statements.

The episode has reignited discussions on respecting personal boundaries, avoiding sexist rhetoric and ensuring that women are not inadvertently used as leverage in political conflicts.
