In a dramatic escalation of both military action and diplomatic messaging, President Donald Trump has publicly distanced the United States from Israel’s strikes on Iran’s massive South Pars gas field, while simultaneously issuing a stark warning to Tehran against retaliating by targeting Gulf allies.

The move, detailed in a series of posts on Truth Social, comes as Iran launched missile strikes on Qatar’s main LNG hub in response, further destabilizing global energy markets.

Trump’s Statement: Distancing from Israel, Defending Qatar

Trump’s remarks sought to achieve two key objectives: absolve the US and its ally Qatar of responsibility for the strike on South Pars, and deter Iran from further attacks on Gulf energy infrastructure.

Target of StatementKey Quote / Action
On Israel’s Strike“Israel, out of anger for what has taken place in the Middle East, has violently lashed out at a major facility known as South Pars Gas Field in Iran.” He claimed the US “knew nothing about this particular attack” and that Qatar was also unaware and uninvolved.
On Iran’s RetaliationAfter Iran struck Qatar’s Ras Laffan facility, Trump warned: “No more attacks will be made by Israel pertaining to this extremely important and valuable South Pars Field unless Iran unwisely decides to attack a very innocent, in this case, Qatar.”
The UltimatumHe threatened that if Iran continues, “the United States of America, with or without the help or consent of Israel, will massively blow up the entirety of the South Pars Gas Field at an amount of strength and power that Iran has never seen or witnessed before.”

Iran’s Retaliatory Strike on Qatar

Trump’s statement came in the wake of a direct threat from Iran and a subsequent attack. Iranian authorities had warned that five energy facilities in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar would be targeted.

Early on Thursday, Iran launched missile strikes on Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City, the country’s main liquefied natural gas (LNG) hub, according to Qatar’s Ministry of Defence. This site has been repeatedly targeted during the conflict.

Trump responded by saying Iran “unjustifiably and unfairly attacked a portion of Qatar’s LNG Gas facility,” arguing that Tehran was mistaken about Qatar’s involvement in the South Pars strike.

The Strategic Stakes: South Pars and Global Energy

The South Pars gas field is the world’s largest natural gas field, shared between Iran and Qatar (where it is known as the North Field). Any direct threat to this infrastructure has immediate and severe implications for global energy supplies.

The situation is further complicated by the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil and LNG shipments pass. The conflict has already sent global energy prices soaring.

By publicly blaming Israel and absolving Qatar, Trump appears to be attempting to prevent a wider conflagration that could draw in more Gulf states and completely destabilize energy markets. His ultimatum to Iran sets a clear, if volatile, red line: attack US allies in the Gulf, and the US will obliterate a cornerstone of Iran’s own energy infrastructure.
