New Delhi, India – In what could be one of the most significant strategic shifts since its entry into India in 2007, German automaker Volkswagen is reportedly in advanced talks with the JSW Group for a potential investment in its local subsidiary, Skoda Auto Volkswagen India. According to a report by Moneycontrol, the discussions involve JSW acquiring a controlling stake in the business, with negotiations currently focused on valuation, investment size, and future capital commitments.

Volkswagen has historically built its India operations independently, investing heavily in manufacturing plants in Pune and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly Aurangabad). It consolidated its brands—including Volkswagen, Skoda, Bentley, Lamborghini, and Porsche—under one entity and launched its ‘India 2.0’ strategy, which introduced models like the Volkswagen Taigun and Virtus, alongside the Skoda Kushaq and Slavia. Despite these efforts, the German automaker remains a relatively small player, with Volkswagen and Skoda together accounting for approximately 2% of the domestic passenger vehicle market as of the June quarter, though they hold around 10% of India’s passenger vehicle exports.

The proposed partnership with JSW Group, an Indian conglomerate with a growing footprint in the automotive sector, mirrors Volkswagen’s successful joint venture strategy in China, where partnerships with SAIC Motor and FAW Group helped build one of its largest overseas businesses. JSW has already partnered with China’s SAIC for MG Motor India and is preparing to launch its own brand of vehicles, while also investing in electric and hybrid vehicle partnerships.

A Skoda Auto Volkswagen India spokesperson responded to queries by stating that India remains a key market in the company’s internationalisation plans and that it is evaluating various business opportunities to implement its strategy in the fast-changing Indian market. However, the company declined to comment on market speculation. The report also noted that discussions are still underway and may not necessarily result in a final deal.

The potential partnership comes as India’s automobile market becomes increasingly competitive, driven by a rapid shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) and software-defined vehicles. For Volkswagen, which has made significant global commitments to electrification, securing a strong local partner could be crucial to navigating the evolving landscape and gaining a larger foothold in one of the world’s fastest-growing auto markets.
