New Delhi, India – The national capital experienced moderate to heavy rainfall on Friday, leading to widespread waterlogging and traffic disruptions in several parts of the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more rain over the weekend, with a red alert in place. The Safdarjung weather station, the city’s representative observatory, recorded 59.2 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8:30 a.m. on Friday and an additional 57.3 mm of rainfall until 5:30 p.m. “Moderate rain occurred at most places and heavy rain at many places accompanied with thunderstorm/lightning over Delhi during the past 24 hours,” the IMD stated.
The downpour caused severe waterlogging in areas like Manglapuri, where vehicles had to navigate through two-foot-deep water, stranding many on the Dwarka flyover. Several two-wheelers were seen parked on the side after attempting to cross the water. Heavy traffic jams were also reported in Delhi Cantonment due to waterlogging in an underpass. The IMD has predicted moderate to light rainfall for Saturday and light to very light rainfall until August 13, with the weather office forecasting light to moderate rainfall over Delhi until August 10.

The waterlogging has drawn political criticism, with AAP Delhi president Saurabh Bharadwaj attacking the government in a post on X. “Greater Kailash (Alaknanda) water logging has turned it into water sports destination. Thanks to PWD Minister who is obsessed with reel making at Minto Road bridge. Place which was already fixed in AAP Govt,” he wrote. The city remains on alert as authorities work to manage the situation and clear waterlogged areas.
