Jerusalem, Israel – A rare and serious incident of dissent has erupted within the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), as approximately 100 soldiers from the Givati Brigade’s Tzabar Battalion walked out of their base in southern Israel. The soldiers departed the Sde Teiman base in the Negev Desert without authorization, carrying only personal bags and leaving behind their military equipment and weapons, following a dispute with their commander over the removal of traditional battalion signs. The Israeli military has launched an investigation, describing the episode as a “serious disciplinary incident.”
The confrontation began after the battalion commander ordered the removal of decorative signs that had been displayed by soldiers. The military stated that the signs contained material that humiliated fresh recruits, arguing they had no place within the unit. However, soldiers disputed this characterization, claiming the items were symbols of battalion tradition, representing the unit’s history, identity, and camaraderie. They reportedly argued that these signs had accompanied them during military operations in Gaza and Lebanon and were passed down through successive intakes of soldiers.
Following the mass walkout, commanders ordered the soldiers to return to the base by 4 pm local time or face being classified as Absent Without Leave (AWOL). A message warned that those who failed to return by the deadline would have their names forwarded to the Military Police. The incident has also raised questions about the battalion’s operational readiness, with reports indicating that the unit is currently not considered qualified to participate in combat missions it had been preparing to undertake in Gaza. This development comes at a particularly sensitive time, as Israeli forces continue military operations in Gaza and Lebanon, making any disruption to unit cohesion a matter of significant concern.
