New Delhi, India – In a video message posted on his social media handles, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the recent protests at Jantar Mantar, saying he wants to forgive those who used abusive language against him and his late mother. “What happened in Jantar Mantar, the country and the world witnessed it. Some mischievous children used abusive language that doesn’t dignify any civilised society. They not only abused me but even my late mother,” Mr. Modi said in the video. He acknowledged that youth can make errors of judgment but emphasized that such mistakes can be corrected.
“I understand the anger in our society. There is a cultural shock about our daughters using such language. This is the time to hug them and show them the right path… I want to forgive them,” the Prime Minister stated. He appealed for restraint from the wider society, arguing that there cannot be any solution by making youngsters run around police stations and courts. “The children are ours and we have to show them the right path even if it is difficult to do to people who have been misled,” he added. The message comes amidst reports of FIRs being filed against some protesters for using expletives against the Prime Minister.

Mr. Modi’s remarks drew a sharp response from Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, who said the Prime Minister should not “threaten Gen Z.” In a post on X, Mr. Gandhi wrote, “PM Modi and Amit Shah — you cannot threaten Gen Z into silence. You are India’s past. Be careful about how you treat India’s future.” The exchange highlights the ongoing political friction over the handling of the protests and the treatment of young demonstrators. The Prime Minister’s call for forgiveness and guidance, however, signals an attempt to de-escalate the situation and steer the discourse towards reconciliation.
