Deadly Overnight Attack Rocks Ukraine’s Capital
Kyiv, August 6, 2026: Russia launched one of its largest overnight missile and drone attacks on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, and surrounding areas, killing at least 17 people and injuring more than 44 others, according to Ukrainian officials. The assault caused widespread destruction across residential neighborhoods, warehouses, commercial buildings, and critical infrastructure.
Emergency responders worked through the night to rescue people trapped beneath collapsed buildings while firefighters battled multiple blazes sparked by the strikes.
Residential Areas Bear the Brunt of the Assault
Several apartment complexes and civilian buildings were severely damaged during the attack. Rescue teams continued searching through the rubble for survivors as medical personnel treated dozens of injured civilians.
The latest strike is among the deadliest attacks on Kyiv in recent weeks, highlighting the increasing intensity of Russia’s aerial campaign against Ukraine.
Russia Claims Military Facilities Were Targeted
Russia’s Defence Ministry said the operation targeted logistics centers, warehouses, and facilities allegedly connected to Ukraine’s drone production and military supply network.
However, Ukrainian authorities rejected those claims, stating that residential areas and civilian infrastructure were heavily affected, resulting in significant civilian casualties and widespread property damage.
Missiles and Drones Launched in Coordinated Attack
According to Ukrainian officials, Russia launched 24 ballistic missiles, four Zircon cruise missiles, and 115 attack drones during the overnight assault.
Ukraine’s air defence systems intercepted many of the incoming drones, but officials said the ballistic missiles were not successfully intercepted, underscoring the growing challenges facing the country’s air defence capabilities.
Zelenskyy Urges Allies to Strengthen Air Defence
Following the attack, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appealed to international partners to accelerate the delivery of advanced air defence systems and interceptor missiles.
He emphasized that strengthening Ukraine’s air defence remains essential to protecting civilians from continued missile and drone attacks.
Drone Warfare Continues to Escalate
The latest assault comes as both Russia and Ukraine continue exchanging long-range drone strikes. Ukraine has also carried out attacks on military-related infrastructure inside Russia, saying the operations are aimed at weakening Moscow’s war capabilities.
Military analysts say drone warfare has become a defining feature of the conflict, allowing both sides to strike targets far beyond the front lines.
Humanitarian Crisis Deepens
As the war enters another intense phase, repeated missile and drone attacks continue to devastate communities across Ukraine. Thousands of civilians have been killed or injured since the conflict escalated in 2022, while millions remain displaced.
Despite continued diplomatic efforts by the international community, there has been little progress toward ending the conflict, and humanitarian agencies warn that civilians continue to bear the heaviest burden of the war.
