In a dramatic turn of events on Tuesday, the nomination of senior Congress leader Meenakshi Natarajan for the Rajya Sabha elections from Madhya Pradesh was rejected by the Returning Officer, triggering a massive political firestorm and a high-voltage confrontation between the Congress and the BJP .

The rejection, which came during the scrutiny of nominations, has virtually paved the way for the ruling BJP to sweep all three vacant Rajya Sabha seats from the state unopposed .

Why Was the Nomination Rejected?

The nomination was canceled after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) raised a formal objection. The saffron party alleged that Natarajan had willfully concealed information regarding a pending criminal case in her election affidavit .

BJP leaders pointed to a private complaint pending before a court in Hyderabad, concerning a notice over claims of Rs 10 crore compensation. “The information deliberately withheld by the Congress candidate amounts to the offence of concealing a criminal record,” Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav stated, welcoming the EC’s decision .

Officials confirmed that while the Returning Officer gave Natarajan an opportunity to furnish the missing details, she failed to do so, leading to a “reasoned order” of rejection .

Congress Cries Foul: ‘Daylight Robbery’

The Congress party reacted with intense anger, dubbing the move a “daylight robbery of democracy” and alleging a deep political conspiracy by the BJP to subvert the Constitution .

Speaking to the press in Bhopal, Natarajan accused the BJP of manipulating the electoral process. “They are clearly attempting to manipulate the Rajya Sabha election just as they previously subverted elections in Madhya Pradesh. What was limited to vote theft has now become seat theft,” she charged .

Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal asserted that the allegations of non-disclosure are “complete humbug” and a desperate attempt to snatch a seat from the Indian National Congress .

High Drama at the Election Commission

The political temperature soared further when a delegation of top Congress leaders—including Jairam Ramesh, K.C. Venugopal, Sachin Pilot, and Bhupesh Baghel—rushed to the Election Commission (EC) office in New Delhi late Tuesday night to submit a petition .

In a scene of high drama, the delegation was initially stopped by security and denied entry, leading to a dharna (sit-in) outside the poll body’s headquarters . Jairam Ramesh expressed shock, stating he had “never seen anything like this” in his 35 years as a parliamentarian . The EC later scheduled a meeting with the Congress delegation for Wednesday .

The Politics Behind the Numbers

The stakes in Madhya Pradesh are exceptionally high. In the 230-member assembly, the BJP has 164 MLAs, comfortably enough to win two Rajya Sabha seats (where a candidate needs 58 votes). However, the BJP surprised everyone by fielding a third candidate, Mahesh Kewat, banking on surplus votes and cross-voting .

Had Natarajan’s nomination stood, the Congress would have had a fighting chance to secure at least one seat, relying on its 60-plus MLAs and potential rebel votes. With her nomination rejected, the BJP is now poised to win all three seats unopposed .

Adding to the intrigue, BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya hinted that the information used to reject Natarajan came from within the Congress ranks in Telangana. “We are getting papers from Telangana, where their government is in power. It must have been Congress people themselves who gave us the information,” he claimed, pointing to internal rifts in the opposition party .

The Congress has vowed to challenge the decision legally, with the party’s legal cell indicating they will approach the Supreme Court. The polling for the Rajya Sabha elections is scheduled for June 18 .
