Imtiaz Ali’s period romantic drama ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’ witnessed a modest growth on its second day, collecting an estimated ₹1.85-2 crore net in India, according to early estimates from Sacnilk and other tracking portals .

This marks a slight improvement from the film’s opening day collection of ₹1.15 crore, bringing its total India net collection to approximately ₹3-3.57 crore after two days . The film is currently running across approximately 1,266 shows with an overall occupancy of around 15 percent .

Marginal growth amid crowded release

‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’ witnessed a growth of approximately 60 percent on Saturday, which is decent but not enough to give the film a strong foothold at the ticket counters . The occupancy rose from 11 percent on Friday to around 16 percent on Saturday .

The film, which features Diljit Dosanjh, Sharvari, Vedang Raina and Naseeruddin Shah in pivotal roles, opened to positive reviews from critics, with particular praise for its emotional storytelling, A.R. Rahman’s music, and the performances of the lead cast . However, the appreciation has not yet translated into strong box office numbers.

The primary challenge facing the film is the crowded box office clash. ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’ released alongside five other Hindi films on June 12, including Kangana Ranaut’s ‘Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata’, Manoj Bajpayee’s ‘Governor: The Silent Saviour’, and Vikram Bhatt’s horror thriller ‘Haunted 3D: Echoes of the Past’ .

Haunted 3D emerges as surprise leader

Among the new releases, ‘Haunted 3D: Echoes of the Past’ emerged as the strongest opener, collecting an estimated ₹2.5-2.8 crore on its first day, significantly outperforming its competitors . The film appears to have benefited from strong interest among horror fans and the brand value associated with Vikram Bhatt’s earlier horror successes.

‘Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata’ collected approximately ₹1 crore on its opening day from 2,181 shows, while ‘Governor’ earned around ₹90 lakh from 1,427 shows . ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’ secured the second position among the Hindi releases of the day .

About the film

Set against the backdrop of the Partition of India in 1947, ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’ is a romantic drama that follows the story of star-crossed lovers torn apart by the tragic division of the subcontinent . The film alternates between timelines — following a younger couple (Vedang Raina and Sharvari) torn apart by the tragedy, and an older narrative where Diljit Dosanjh’s character uncovers this unfinished love story.

The music, composed by A.R. Rahman with lyrics by Irshad Kamil, reunites the trio that previously collaborated on acclaimed films such as ‘Rockstar’, ‘Tamasha’, and ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’ . The soundtrack has been one of the highlights of the film.

Outlook for the weekend

With the film showing modest growth on Saturday, trade analysts are now looking at the Sunday collections to determine if ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’ can gain momentum and find its audience . The film’s target audience and positive word-of-mouth will be crucial in determining its long-term theatrical prospects .

However, with the crowded box office and the unexpected success of ‘Haunted 3D’, the Imtiaz Ali directorial faces an uphill battle in its opening weekend. The film’s lifetime collection will largely depend on how it performs over the coming weekdays and whether the positive reviews eventually translate into sustained footfalls.
