An uneasy calm prevailed in the Vikasnagar area of Dehradun on Sunday, a day after a 44-year-old BJP worker was allegedly beaten to death by a group of armed men following a dispute over irrigation water. The incident has triggered widespread communal tension, leading to large-scale protests, retaliatory violence, bulldozer action by authorities, and the suspension of internet services in the region .

The violence erupted on Saturday evening in Bairagiwala village. According to police, the deceased, identified as Vinod Kumar, a local BJP OBC Morcha functionary, had an argument with his neighbor, Imtiaz, over the supply of water to their adjoining fields .

Soon after, a mob of over 40 people, armed with lathis, wooden planks, hammers and shovels, stormed Vinod’s home. The attackers allegedly beat him and his family members . Vinod, along with his brothers Ashok and Rajesh, and sister-in-law Sushma, were rushed to a hospital, where Vinod succumbed to a severe head injury inflicted by a hammer .

Retaliatory Violence and Bulldozer Action

As news of the murder spread, the area witnessed intense protests. Angry crowds, including right-wing groups, blocked roads and demanded strict action . The situation escalated when protesters pelted stones at the residences of the accused and set one house on fire .

In a significant administrative move, the district authorities deployed bulldozers to demolish the “illegal” properties linked to the primary accused. While initial reports indicated that a portion of a house was razed, officials later confirmed the entire structure was demolished amid chants of “Jai Shri Ram” from the crowd .

Arrests and Investigation

Senior Superintendent of Police Pramendra Singh Dobal confirmed that police teams conducted raids, leading to the arrest of four accused persons: Razzaq, Salman, Javed, and Shahbaz .

An FIR has been registered at the Sahaspur police station under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including murder (103), attempt to murder (109), and rioting. The FIR names 12 suspects, including Imtiaz, Aman, Yunus, and Sharafat Ali, along with 30 to 40 unidentified individuals .

Political Reactions and Security Measures

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami strongly condemned the killing, stating that the “jihadi and violent mindset” attempting to disrupt Uttarakhand’s peace will not be tolerated . State BJP Chief Mahendra Bhatt defended the demolition drive, calling it a “first indication of the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards crime” .

Vikasnagar MLA Munna Singh Chauhan appealed for peace but assured that the perpetrators would face severe punishment .

To prevent the spread of rumors and further flare-ups, authorities have suspended internet services in the sensitive areas. A heavy contingent of Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) and police forces remains deployed in the village to maintain law and order .
