The producers of the highly anticipated Tamil film Jana Nayagan, starring Thalapathy Vijay, have informed the Madras High Court of their intention to withdraw a writ petition filed against the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), clearing a significant legal hurdle that has stalled the movie’s release.

The legal battle began after Jana Nayagan, initially scheduled to release on January 9, 2026, faced certification delays despite the production’s compliance with cuts and modifications suggested by the CBFC’s examining committee.

When the film was unexpectedly referred to a CBFC revising committee following a complaint, KVN Productions — the banner behind the film — filed a writ petition in the Madras High Court on January 6, seeking a directive for immediate certification.

A single judge briefly directed the board to grant a U/A certificate, but that order was stayed and later set aside by a division bench, which highlighted procedural issues and gave producers an option to revise their approach.

After weeks of uncertainty, the makers have decided not to pursue the matter further in court. Instead, they have formally applied to withdraw the writ petition, a move that must be approved by the court in a hearing scheduled for February 10, 2026, before Justice P.T. Asha.

Shift to Revising Committee Review

With the writ petition set to be withdrawn, the film’s certification process will now return fully to the CBFC’s revising committee for review and final decision.

Industry insiders and reports suggest that this decision was also influenced by the urgency to complete certification and announce a release date, especially with the Tamil Nadu assembly elections approaching and the filmmakers eager to avoid further delays.

Implications for the Film’s Release

Jana Nayagan, directed by H. Vinoth and featuring a cast including Pooja Hegde, Mamitha Baiju, Bobby Deol and others, is widely anticipated as Vijay’s last film before his full-time political entry.

With the legal dispute likely ending, attention now turns to the revising committee’s review, after which the CBFC may issue an appropriate certificate — a crucial step for the film’s theatrical release.

Fans and industry observers will be watching closely for updates on the certification outcome and a possible release date announcement once the revising committee concludes its evaluation.
