After ZEE5 removed Diljit Dosanjh’s Satluj from its platform in India two days after release, the move triggered online outrage, with many backing the film
The removal of Diljit Dosanjh-starrer Satluj from ZEE5 just two days after its digital premiere has sparked online outrage. Social media users have expressed disappointment over the film being taken down, especially after it had already faced hurdles with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), which reportedly suggested 120 cuts before its release. The film, which skipped a theatrical release and premiered directly on the streaming platform on July 3, is now unavailable to viewers in India.
The project, originally titled Panjab 95, is based on the life of social activist Jaswant Singh Khalra.
Online reactions
One user praised the film’s depiction of a powerful story and wrote: “Satluj (Punjab 95) is far more than a movie; it’s a cinematic portrayal inspired by one of the most debated chapters in Punjab’s history. Diljit Dosanjh and the entire cast have delivered performances with remarkable conviction and emotion. Delaying or removing it from an OTT platform cannot erase the public discussion it has already generated.”
Another X user wrote: “I CHALLENGE THE DARKNESS. What a pity that ‘Satluj’ has been made unavailable in India. A powerful movie.”
A third user echoed similar sentiments: “I watched Satluj today, and I could not take my eyes off the TV screen. What a powerful and heart-touching film. It is disappointing that such an important film was removed from OTT platforms in India. People deserve the right to watch these true stories.”
ZEE5 issues statement
In an official statement, the streaming platform said it continues to stand by the film, its makers and its creative vision. ZEE5 added that it is exploring legal options to bring it back for viewers in India.
“The response to Satluj since its release has been truly overwhelming. We are deeply grateful to every viewer who chose to subscribe, watch and champion the film. Your love and support have meant a great deal to us and to everyone who brought this story to life,” the statement read.
“At Zee5, we stand firmly by Satluj and the creative vision behind it. We believe powerful storytelling has the ability to inspire, endure and leave a lasting impact. We remain committed to championing authentic and meaningful narratives,” it continued.
“In light of the current developments, Satluj will be unavailable in India until further notice. We remain committed to exploring every appropriate avenue through due process to bring the film back to our audiences at the earliest opportunity.”
Diljit Dosanjh reacts
Diljit Dosanjh reacted to the film being taken down on OTT with a post, originally written in Punjabi, which was translated as: “#ichallengethedarkness. Shaheed Jaswant Singh Khalra Ji. #Panjab95. Satluj is what happened to Khalra Saab.”
About the film
Satluj did not get a theatrical release in India and was released directly on the streaming platform under its new title after the CBFC reportedly sought more than 120 cuts. The suggested edits included changes to the title, references to Punjab and the identity of the real-life protagonist.
Directed by Honey Trehan, the film also stars Arjun Rampal, Kanwaljit Singh, Suvinder Vicky and Geetika Vidya Ohlyan in key roles.
