Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday created history by becoming India’s longest-serving Prime Minister in a continuous term, surpassing the record of the country’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru .
The milestone was reached when PM Modi completed 4,399 consecutive days in office, crossing Nehru’s previous record of 4,398 days served after the first general election in 1952 .
A Landmark Achievement
As the head of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, Modi has now held uninterrupted office since first assuming power on May 26, 2014 . His third consecutive term, secured following the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, has solidified his position in the country’s political history .
In a series of posts on social media platform X, the Prime Minister described the 12-year journey as one defined by “dedication, trust, development and public welfare.”
“Dedication and a spirit of service towards nation-building have been our invaluable assets. It is through continuous efforts over the past 12 years, inspired by the spirit of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ (Together with All, Development for All), that today we are moving towards a strong and self-reliant India,” Modi said .
The Prime Minister credited his government’s initiatives across sectors for enhancing India’s global standing. “It is the result of our relentless efforts that the country has gained a new identity across the world today, from infrastructure development to the digital revolution,” he added .
NDA Leaders Hail the ‘Era of a Karma Yogi’
A chorus of praise came from NDA leaders who described PM Modi’s tenure as the “era of a karma yogi.”
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said, “Today is a historic day. This 12-year period is the era of a karma yogi, an ascetic, who has worked tirelessly without pausing for a moment to take Mother India to the pinnacle” .
Union Minister CR Patil called the twelve years “unparalleled” (“bemisaal”), stating that PM Modi has “formulated and implemented schemes to meet everyone’s needs and ensured that the benefits actually reach the people” .
NDA Conclave at Bharat Mandapam
To commemorate this landmark occasion, the stage shifted to the Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, where Prime Minister Modi chaired a high-level conclave of NDA leaders.
The meeting brought together Chief Ministers, Deputy Chief Ministers, and senior leaders from all 22 NDA-ruled states and union territories .
Key attendees included Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Andhra Pradesh CM N. Chandrababu Naidu .
Sources indicated that the agenda included a review of flagship schemes, the “Viksit Bharat” roadmap for 2047, and discussions on the ongoing West Asia crisis .
Celebrations and ‘Viksit Bharat’ Vision
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) celebrated the milestone under the banner of “12 Saal Vishwas Ke, Vikas Ke, Jan Kalyan Ke” (12 Years of Trust, Development and Public Welfare) .
Senior BJP leaders highlighted the government’s achievements across multiple sectors, including the abrogation of Article 370, the push for self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat), digital transformation, infrastructure expansion, and a zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism .
As India eyes the goal of becoming a developed nation (Viksit Bharat) by 2047, Prime Minister Modi emphasized that the government will continue to move forward on the path of “service, good governance, and prosperity” to realize this vision .
