Residents of the national capital can expect a mixed bag of weather this week. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), partly cloudy skies and a smattering of rain will offer some respite, but they will not be enough to stop the mercury from rising. By the weekend, temperatures are forecast to soar to a scorching 44 degrees Celsius .
Weekly Forecast: Heat Overpowers Rainfall
The IMD has predicted that the maximum temperature is likely to resume increasing from Monday onwards. After a brief respite, the heat will build up, reaching between 42°C and 44°C by Saturday (June 20) . This is significantly above the seasonal normal of around 38.8°C for this time of year .
While the week will see partly cloudy skies, the rainfall will be isolated and short-lived. The IMD has forecast spells of very light to light rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds, specifically on Monday afternoon/evening and again on Saturday . Thunderstorm activity is also possible on Tuesday afternoon .
Why the Temperature is Rising
Meteorologists explain that the rise in temperature, despite the presence of thunderstorms, is due to the isolated nature of the weather activity.
“Northwesterly winds are expected to continue over northwestern India, including Delhi-NCR. There will not be widespread rain and thunderstorms over northwest India; that’s why a gradual increase is anticipated over the next few days,” said Mahesh Palawat, vice-president of Skymet Weather .
Humidity and ‘Feel-Like’ Temperature
Adding to the discomfort will be the rising humidity levels. The minimum temperature is also expected to climb, potentially reaching 30°C to 32°C by Saturday .
High humidity will lead to a high heat index, or “feels-like” temperature, making the conditions feel even more oppressive than the actual thermometer reading . On Sunday, the city experienced humidity ranging from 38% to 81% .
Advisory for Residents
With temperatures climbing and the heat index high, residents are advised to take precautions. The IMD has urged people to remain cautious during afternoon hours as the heat intensifies and to stay alert for sudden thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds, particularly on Monday .
